Ah, the holidays have come and gone and this year they just weren't all that. I really enjoy giving and the time to get together, but it just didn't come together for me.
I think part of it dealt with getting my ass handed to me almost every time I said "Happy Holidays." Now, for some reason it is open season on anyone that doesn't say "Merry Christmas." My philosophy my whole life has been to say "Happy Holidays." It has just always seemed more inclusive of Christmas, New Years, Chanukah, or any other holiday that anyone celebrates. Now, on each individual holiday I will wish a "Merry Christmas," "Happy New Year," or "Joyeous Festivus." That has always seemed much more appropriate to me.
This year however, when I would wish someone a "Happy Holidays" it was met with the equally festive, "I am not afraid to say it...Merry Christmas." Well, good for you. I had not realized the sheer terror that such a phrase might invoke.
Mind you, I wasn't running around pointing fingers and saying, "Hey buddy. I am an Atheist and we say Happy Holidays." and then poke people in the eye. I merely would say my inoquous salutation in a real heartfelt way. Now, it is hard not to feel like people are defeating the purpose of the season with a religious stance like that. What the Duck people. It is not like I am shouting from rooftops, "ALL CHRISTIANS MUST ACCEPT THE PHRASE HAPPY HOLIDAYS FOR IT IS SECULAR AND YOU WILL NOT IMPOSE YOUR OPPRESSIVE NAIVE BELIEFS OF A JEWISH ZOMBIE WHO IS HIS OWN FATHER'S BIRTHDAY IN A FEW DAYS!!!" In fact, it would have been just fine if people just said "Merry Christmas." I am down with that, but I had to be schooled.
Yeah, it happens every year, but this year it was like just about everyone had to make some comment about it. Most don't know I am an Atheist unless it comes up in conversation and I usually do not initiate it, so there must be something in the water.
The funny thing is, when I query these folks about Mithra's birthday or Horus or Osiris or Prometheus or other deities whose birthday is December 25th, they just walk away. Now granted, I have to be in a particular mood to offer that counter and usually they have to piss me off with their statement of belief, but come on. Ahhh, that is right, Christianity isn't about fair, open-minded discussion, it is about blind, deaf and dumb faith.
Now, please don't misunderstand. I don't have an issue with Christians, Jews, Moslems, or any other religious group as a whole. In fact, I enjoy debate and discussion with many folks. I would have a similar problem with Atheists that were loudmouth dumbasses also. Apparently though, as I write this, I get the impression that anyone who is an Atheist is considered a loudmouth dumbass for merely not believing the myth of Jesus and god and the like.
So, what could have been a nice relaxing season with well wishing and a common human bond, turned into a political episode. Most of the time I merely smiled and went on my merry way. But sheesh, it just took the "Happy" out of my "Holidays."
