A couple weeks ago me lovely wife Salma Gundy and meself took a wee break in our otherwise busy schedule.
One of our favorite places to go is the Borrego Valley Inn in Borrego Springs, CA. It is a nice small inn that caters to adults--NO KIDS!!! Now, the hotel is great. It is peaceful and relaxing and quaint. The owners are superb and the ambiance is very serene. The rooms have tiled floors and little enclosed patio areas with lounge chairs and little tables. The decor is a Southwestern/Mexican sort of theme.
Borrego Springs is a great getaway if you are looking to literally get away. There is nothing to do in Borrego Springs. There are no water parks, no tours, no museums, no nuthin. Oh, and one other thing...it is hotter than hell there. Really. I think is was a cool 117 during one of our days there. It is located in a desert valley and it is hot. Now, I am sure it is temperate during the on season, but we were not there in the on season.
Ye haves t'understand that we be livin' in a mild weather area. Right now we are peaking at about 103ish. I know, I know. Why go there then? Well, exactly for the reason I mentioned above...there is nothing there. We were able to just relax and do nothing.
The rooms are cool with the air conditioning and there are two pools. One nice regular pool and one nice clothing optional pool. Great for sunbathing save for when you burn your biscuits on the lounge chairs.
The weather is so warm that swimming at midnight is perfectly comfortable. In fact, one evening we swam as the sun went down. We were joined by some Bats. These bats were a riot. They would sweep down in circles right to the top of the water and then fly off. Salma Gundy was a bit unnerved, but liked it all the same. One seemed to get very close to her. I assume nothing happened, but she has had a penchant for staying up late and drinking blood lately. Hmmmm. Go figure.
One of the days we took a little trip to Julian, CA. Julian, while only 29 miles away was about 20 degrees cooler. It is a pleasant little town, but a little touristy for my taste. We kicked around Borrego Springs a little--very little. Mostly though, we relaxed and napped and swam and read and watched The Dog Whisperer.
The biggest complaint we had was the food. There are really no terribly good restaurants in the area. There may be during the on season, but most of the food we had was rather banal. There was one Mexican food joint that was pretty good, but we were done with Mexican food.
Our biggest mistake was watching the cooking channel. Oh man, when there are shitty restaurants around, do not watch the cooking channel. We were huungry. Where could we go that would have nicer fare? The Country Club! Perfect!! Well, that was a let down also. I had prime rib from a cow that they had to blow the dust off of before they slaughtered it. Meh.
Now, overall, the trip was relaxing and the Borrego Valley Inn is definitely worth going to enjoy. The pools are well maintained. Ask Salma Gundy who made fast friends with the pool guy. ( I would like to take a moment to explain the clothing optional rules. If you have a nice body, you are not allowed in. Use common decency will you? As a matter of fact, there was a man with a pretty good physique sunbathing using the option. Well, we had none of that. I threw cacti at him until he did the right thing and put some clothes on. So, please heed the rules.)
Hey, San Diego Comicon is coming up. So, I will let you know how that goes.
