I am a GI Joe fan. When I was little it was the 12 inch Adventure Team. In the early 80's it was the 3 3/4 inch Joes. Just a few years ago a new incarnation of GI Joe caught my attention--Sigma 6. Frankly, I have loved them all. As of late, I am still hooked on the Sigma 6 figures even though Hasbro chose poorly and quit making them.
I enjoy the diverse characters. I enjoy the adventure military aspect. I enjoy the idea of a special ops team dedicated to fighting evil all over the world.
This morning at 12:00 am, all of these coalesced into this movie, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. I was excited at first when the news first broke. I was then very wary as the information leaked about the movie changing the mythology behind my most beloved characters and concepts. HOWEVER, I decided to waylay any judgment until I saw the movie.
I have to say, while there were plenty of deviations from what was, the movie itself was actually very fun. It really, for me, was reminiscent of the older bond movies. The action/adventure, the over the top villains, the remote locales, the super powered gadgets, all wrapped into a fast paced action film. Were there corny bits? Of course, but anyone who watched the cartoon is familiar with that. Were there issues with characters deviating from comic, cartoon, action figure character lore. Sure, but overall everything worked out.
The concept for the movie is not a U.S. team, but rather an international team. That I didn't like so much. I am a patriot and GI Joe is uniquely American. It worked for the movie, but that was bit sticks in my craw. Also, there are a couple romantic involvements that while they push the film forward are difficult for an old timer like me to accept.
This is obviously a first movie and what they did with the bad guys, Cobra Commander and Destro was commendable. They are established now. And it will make some of the more eccentric aspects of the character (i.e. Destro's mask) plausible.
Many of our favorite characters are here. Snake Eyes, Duke, Scarlett, General Hawk, Storm Shadow and the Baroness. Ah yes, the Baroness. They did very well with the women in this film.
I am not giving much away because I think this is a great popcorn movie that people should go watch. Perhaps the most fun movie of the summer. Go see it. It is not deep. It is not dramatic. It is action adventure and that is GI Joe. Once you have seen the film, then you'll know. AND knowing is half the battle.
